The Wild Blue Yonder?

These are the photos I meant to post yesterday with this title.  They are from the Udvar-Hazy Center, the annex for the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum on the Mall in Washington, DC.  Udvar-Hazy is near Dulles airport (about 10 minutes from my house).  Admission is free, but parking is $15.  If you're stuck at Dulles with a long time frame, take the shuttle for .50 cents each way to visit this museum. It's well worth it.

First, the SR-71.  Featured in the new Transformers movie.  They filmed here.

Next, the P-47 dressed for the D-Day Invasion.
My son tells me the markings were large and bright to avoid
friendly fire incidences.

An FW-190
The Nazis' fighter, scourge of the Russians.

For some reason, I don't retain the detail my son does about all these planes.  Two hours in here and he's a happy camper for two days.  Of course, he did try to hit me up for money for a snack.  Usually he tries to get money for the simulators as well.  The answer was: NO.

Mean mom.

By the way, there was a cache nearby. ha ha

Your son would LOVE the National Museum of the US Airforce near where I live (at Wright Patterson AFB). It's free too. And I think parking is free. Of course, it's on Ohio. Heh.

I had no idea that existed! CH definitely would like to see that!

Bug, my husband and I have been there before and my husband is a patron -- as a retired USAF pilot, he feels very strongly about that one! It is on their list of things to do. If they do it, I'll come visit you!

Mary, now you have a reason to come to DC again! Besides the fact you'll be 10 minutes from us having coffee!

I can understand why your son loved this place!!
I think it looks interesting and I don't even have an interest in that sort of thing. Strange, I know.

Congrat's to your dd on getting her Driver's Permit. I, too, have a 16 yr old chaueffer. Being her passenger is sometimes a white-knuckle experience. Best of luck and safety to all of us!

My son - and my father - would really enjoy this. We've already got 3 generations of pilots in the family so no real surprise there :).

PS Wow that photo arrived quickly, several days ahead of what they were predicting. Glad you like it.
